New fall tour dates announced ahead of Sept. 17 release of SELF-TITLED

New tour dates have been announced for fall in support of Wesley Stace’s forthcoming record, Self-Titled (out September 17 on Yep Roc Records, see track list below). The upcoming tour dates will feature both headlining performances as well as a traveling version of his Cabinet of Wonders, the ongoing variety show that draws together collaborators from the worlds of music, literature and comedy all hand-picked by Stace, himself.

Upcoming Cabinet of Wonders performers are scheduled to include Janeane Garofalo, Todd Barry, Dean & Britta, John McCrea (Cake), Alec Ounsworth (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), Black Prairie, Bobcat Goldthwait and regular Cabinet collaborator Eugene Mirman. See a list of dates below, as well as ticket links here.

Stace chose not to use his well-established stage name for his newest record, which marks 25 years since he first took the John Wesley Harding moniker, due to the considerably more personal nature of the new songs. “Novels seem to take care of the intellectual business for me these days, and my songs have become a lot more intimate and autobiographical, requiring a different musical treatment entirely. It seemed ridiculous to sing them under any name but my own,” notes Stace, adding, “It’s time to bring everything under one roof.”

Stace co-wrote two of the tracks from Self-Titled—“Stare at the Sun” and “When I Knew”— with the Fiery Furnaces’ Eleanor Friedberger. Both songs appear in alternate versions on Friedberger’s critically acclaimed new album Personal Record, which was entirely co-written by Stace. Of Personal Record, SPIN hails the pair’s “easy collaboration” while NPR Music notes that Harding “knows a little something about smart love songs of every stripe.”

Stace’s version of “Stare at the Sun” is streaming at The New York Times while his version of “When I Knew” can be streamed at The Wall Street Journal.

Along with its live incarnation which Stace will host both in NYC and on the road, Wesley Stace’s Cabinet of Wonders is set for its second season of exclusive radio distribution by NPR. NPR’s “Cabinet of Wonders” is recorded live at NYC’s City Winery and airs in six one-hour episodes beginning this summer.
