The Jessold Tour – what it means

It’s quite muddling what is happening where and when during this enormous list of events around the publication of Charles Jessold, so I thought it would be smart to explain each event (as I understand it) so no one is disappointed if I only juggle when they’d been led to believe that I was going to tap-dance. Here goes:

January 30: Wes & Eugene’s Cabinet of Wonders at The Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, CO

This is a regular Cabinet of Wonders show, featuring JWH & The English UK, Eugene Mirman, Juliana Hatfield & Evan Dando, Paul Muldoon, Colson Whitehead – and it’s  obviously going to be fairly good.

January 31: Aspen Book Launch Party at Explore Booksellers

I imagine I’ll read, but in this special instance, the band is out there with me too – so we’ll doubtless take the chance to play a few songs that are completely irrelevant  to “Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer”

February 3: Panel at AWP, Washington DC

Rosanne Cash, Kristin Hersh, Josh Ritter and I will talk, read and play a song a piece.

February 3: Concert at The Birchmere, Alexandria VA

Rosanne Cash, Kristin Hersh, Josh Ritter and I will talk, read and play a lot of songs, including a bunch of duets.

February 6: Bock Benefit at PS 122, NYC

I will play a few songs with The English UK at the benefit, and we’ll also accompany Tanya Donnelly and Rick Moody. This event is Sold Out.

February 11: Soundcheck, WNYC

I will read and play a song on the radio. The Jessold Consort will play some of Daniel Felsenfeld’s envisioning of the music of Charles Jessold.

February 11: John Wesley Harding’s Cabinet of Wonders at City Winery, NYC

This is a regular cabinet of wonders show, featuring JWH & The English UK, Eugene Mirman, Ben Ottewell (of Gomez), Ted Leo, The Fiery Furnaces, Rivka Galchen and  Patrick McGrath. One further, sensational musical act will be announced on 1/21.

February 17: Reading & Concert at Forum Theater, St Joseph’s University, Philadelphia

This is an exciting one for me. The Jessold Consort will play the entirety of “Every Composer Is a Murderer”, Daniel Felsenfeld’s envisioning of the music of Charles  Jessold, and I’ll read from the book. This will be the first live performance of the entire piece.

February 23: Discussion & Reading at Hunter College, NYC

The wonderful writer Alex Ross and I will discuss various fictional classical composers, including Charles Jessold.

February 24: Discussion, Reading & Music at NYU

This will be somewhat the same as February 17th, but in NYC, and I’m not sure whether we’ll do the whole thing or not!

February 26: A chat on the radio at West Coast Live, San Francisco

February 26: Details of an afternoon event at the Noise Pop Culture Club are forthcoming.

February 27: An afternoon reading at Book Passage in Corte Madera, CA – note: I am, as of now, intending to play one song (a particular song) at each reading. Unless I get  separated from my guitar.

February 27: The Rumpus host a launch for the book at Amnesia, in San Francisco.

Also on the bill will be Daniel Handler, Lisa Brown, comedian Nato Green and Tiny Television. I’ll be reading and singing. This promises to be a lovely evening. Free  book with admission!

February 28: There is very likely to be another reading somewhere in the Bay Area on this day.

March 2: A reading at Elliott Bay Books in Seattle. See above for song information.

March 3: A special night at the Central Library in Los Angeles, CA, at which I shall read, sing and chat. Many other artistes will also be featured on this bill.

March 4: Live Wire! in Portland. You know I always look forward to this show. Not sure what’s happening as of now, but it’s always fun, as those Portlanders among ye know.

March 6: A reading at Powells. Will have guitar on me.

March 9: A reading, in the company of the excellent writer and reader Jonathan Coe, at Newtonville Books in the Boston area. I will play that same song.

March 10: A reading, in the company of the excellent writer and reader Jonathan Coe, at Book Court in Brooklyn, NY. I will play that same song.

March 11: John Wesley Harding’s Cabinet of Wonders at City Winery, NYC

This is a regular cabinet of wonders show, featuring JWH & The English UK, Eugene Mirman, Josh Ritter, Tift Merritt, Jonathan Coe, Sean Wilsey, Paul Muldoon and other  acts to be announced shortly.

March 12: A reading, in the company of the excellent writer and reader Jonathan Coe, at The Raconteur in Metuchen, NJ. I will play that same song.

March 16: A reading, in the company of the excellent writer and reader Jonathan Coe, at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, ONT. Also reading will be Cynthia Holz. I will  probably not be playing my guitar at this reading. Sorry, Canada.

March 22: A reading at the Free Library in Philadelphia, with David Levithan. I may also not play the guitar at this event.

April 22: John Wesley Harding’s Cabinet of Wonders at City Winery, NYC

This is a regular cabinet of wonders show, featuring JWH & The English UK, Eugene Mirman, Marshall Crenshaw, Rick Moody and many other acts to be announced  shortly.
